Grand Bahama's 'Buddy Buckets', national player of the year

Chavano "Buddy" Hield grew up in Eight Mile Rock on Grand Bahama, one of seven children. He came to the U.S. to play at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas and chose Oklahoma over Kansas.

Hield got better every year in Norman (2012–2016). He went from 7.8 points as a freshman to Big 12 Player of the Year as a junior, then returned for a senior season that became one of the greatest in school history. He averaged 25.0 points and led the nation in three-pointers. His 46 points in a triple-overtime loss at Kansas drew a standing ovation from the Allen Fieldhouse crowd. He swept the Wooden Award, the Naismith Award and other national player of the year honors.

The New Orleans Pelicans drafted him sixth overall in 2016. He has since played for Sacramento, Indiana, Philadelphia, Golden State and Atlanta. He won the 2020 Three-Point Contest and set the Kings' and Pacers' single-season records for three-pointers made. In September 2026 he was traded to Charlotte and then, five days later, to the Chicago Bulls.

As of October 8, 2026, Hield is a shooting guard for the Bulls, entering his 11th NBA season.
