Buster Rhymes

1985 · Round 4 · Pick 85 · WR · Minnesota Vikings

George "Buster" Rhymes grew up in Miami's Liberty City and was Dade County's Athlete of the Year in 1979–80 at Miami Northwestern. He chose Oklahoma in part to follow his favorite player, Elvis Peacock. He played on the team that won the Orange Bowl in January 1981, sat out 1982 for academic reasons, and returned as an All-American receiver after Marcus Dupree took over at running back. Minnesota drafted him in the fourth round, 85th overall, in 1985. That season he led the NFL with 1,345 kickoff return yards, then a league record. He won the 1988 Grey Cup with Winnipeg. Tidbit: rapper Busta Rhymes took his stage name from him, at Chuck D's suggestion. Note: public sources on him are thin, so this bio is short. Pro Football Reference has a player page for him (linked below), but its stats weren't pulled for this bio. The Oklahoman wrote on May 22, 1983: "They say Buster Rhymes will be a starter for the Oklahoma Sooners at wide receiver this fall."
