Darrell Royal
1950 · Round 20 · Pick 250 · B · New York Yanks
Darrell Royal was born in Hollis, Oklahoma. He was an All-American quarterback at Oklahoma from 1946 to 1949 under Bud Wilkinson. He was drafted in the 20th round, 250th overall, in 1950 by the New York franchise, which OU lists as the Yanks and Wikipedia as the Bulldogs. The team was called the Bulldogs in 1949 and renamed the Yanks in 1950, so both labels are the same team. He started coaching instead: he was an assistant at NC State and Tulsa and spent a season as Edmonton's head coach in 1953. He was head coach at Mississippi State (1954–1955), Washington (1956) and Texas (1957–1976), going 184–60–5 without a losing season. His Texas teams won three national titles and 11 Southwest Conference titles. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1983, and Texas's stadium was renamed for him in 1996. He died on November 7, 2012. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on September 8, 1949 (NewsBank page 37): "Darrell Royal was back as quarterback in the No. 1 backfield with Pearson, Thomas and Nolan Lang, 210-pound newcomer from Waycross, Ga."
