Dave Baker

1959 · Round 1 · Pick 5 · QB · San Francisco 49ers

Dave Baker was born in Coffeyville, Kansas, and was all-state in three sports at Bartlesville High School in Oklahoma. He played quarterback, running back and defensive back for Bud Wilkinson's Oklahoma teams, which went 30–2 and won three conference titles during his three varsity seasons, in the middle of the record 47-game winning streak. San Francisco drafted him fifth overall in 1959. He played safety for three seasons (1959–1961), made 21 interceptions (still a 49ers per-season record at seven a year), made the Pro Bowl as a rookie, and was second-team All-Pro in 1960. After two years in the Army he went to Southern Nazarene University to start its intercollegiate athletics program and teach physical education. He died on September 4, 2002.
