Derrick Strait
2004 · Round 3 · Pick 76 · CB · New York Jets
Derrick Strait was born in Austin and played quarterback, running back and defensive back at Lanier High School, where he ran for 1,439 yards as a senior. He started at cornerback for all four of his seasons at Oklahoma (2000–2003) and was the 2000 Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year on the national title team. In 2003 he was a unanimous All-American and won both the Jim Thorpe Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. He also holds OU's single-season record with five fumble recoveries, and Sports Illustrated named him to its All-Decade Team. The New York Jets drafted him in the third round, 76th overall, in 2004. He later played for Tampa Bay, Chicago and Carolina and finished with 71 tackles. After that he had brief stints in the Arena Football League and the CFL. He is retired. The Oklahoman wrote on August 11, 2003: "Strait played quarterback, defensive back and running back during his senior season at Lanier High School in Austin, Texas, but said he doesn't think his versatility has anything to do with his success at cornerback."
