George Thomas
1950 · Round 1 · Pick 6 · B · Washington Redskins
George "Spike" Thomas was born in Fairland, Oklahoma. A standout high school basketball player, he was recruited by Tulane for basketball, but OU coach Jim Tatum convinced him to stay home for football. He lettered from 1946 to 1949, was first-team all-conference in 1948 and 1949, and was a first-team All-American in 1949. He graduated with a business degree in 1950. Washington drafted him sixth overall in 1950. He played two seasons for the Redskins and one for the New York Giants (1952), with 371 total yards and two touchdowns. He died on May 23, 1989. Pro Football Reference has a player page for him (linked below), but its stats weren't pulled for this bio. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on January 23, 1950 (NewsBank page 37): "Two members of Oklahoma's unbeaten eleven were grabbed in the first round Saturday night—halfback George Thomas by Washington and guard Stan West by Los Angeles."
