Jerry Tubbs
1957 · Round 1 · Pick 10 · C · Chicago Cardinals
Jerry Tubbs was born in Throckmorton County, Texas. He played center at Breckenridge High School, won Texas state titles in 1951 and 1952, and was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame in 1971. Oklahoma won all 31 games of his three varsity seasons. As a sophomore he filled in at fullback against Texas, his first time in the backfield, before Bud Wilkinson moved him to center and linebacker. In the 1955 Texas game he made 27 tackles and three interceptions, which Wilkinson called the greatest game ever played by a Sooner. In 1956 he was a unanimous All-American, UPI Lineman of the Year and winner of the Knute Rockne Trophy. The Chicago Cardinals drafted him 10th overall in 1957. He played for them, San Francisco and Dallas (1960–1967), and made the Pro Bowl in 1962. He then coached Cowboys linebackers for 22 years, winning two Super Bowls. He died on June 13, 2012. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on November 27, 1955 (NewsBank page 102): "Center Jerry Tubbs, who suffered a knee injury that isn't believed to be serious, added, "Lunsford is as good as the people say he is."."
