Jimbo Elrod
1976 · Round 5 · Pick 144 · LB · Kansas City Chiefs
Jimbo Elrod was born in Memphis and graduated from East Central High School in Tulsa in 1972. He came to Oklahoma on a dual football-wrestling scholarship and was on the 1974 national championship wrestling team as well as the 1974 and 1975 national title football teams. He was a consensus All-American in 1975, with 20 tackles for loss. His 44 career tackles for loss were OU's record until 2001. He starred in the Orange Bowl played in January 1976, a 14–6 win over Michigan that clinched the national title. Kansas City drafted him in the fifth round, 144th overall, in 1976. He played three seasons for the Chiefs and one for Houston, then became a radio host on KOKC, OU's flagship station. He was killed in a car accident on December 12, 2016. An April 9, 1976 Daily Oklahoman article (NewsBank page 28) says: "Jimbo Elrod, a linebacker prospect, became the sixth Sooner drafted, going to New Orleans on the 20th pick of the fifth round." Our draft table (and Pro Football Reference) list him as a fifth-round pick of Kansas City.
