Joe Don Looney
1964 · Round 6 · Pick 44 · RB · Kansas City Chiefs (AFL)
Joe Don Looney was born in San Angelo, Texas. His father, Don, played at TCU and in the NFL. Joe Don flunked out of Texas, was kicked out of TCU, and won a junior college national title at Cameron in 1961, setting a punting record in the Junior Rose Bowl. At Oklahoma he was a second-team All-American in 1962 and led the Sooners to the Big Eight title. In 1963 Bud Wilkinson kicked him off the team after a poor game against Texas. Drafted by the NFL's New York Giants (12th overall, 1964) and by AFL teams in Houston (1963) and Kansas City (1964), he chose the NFL. He bounced from the Giants to Baltimore, Detroit, Washington and New Orleans, finishing with 724 rushing yards. He died on September 24, 1988. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on December 1, 1963 (NewsBank page 169): "Joe Don Looney, Oklahoma's exiled halfback who insists there is nothing wrong with his attitude, was a sixth round choice of Kansas City in the American Football League draft Saturday." The Daily Oklahoman wrote on December 6, 1963 (NewsBank page 69): "Looney withdrew from classes Wednesday and returned to the home of his parents at Fort Worth."
