Kevin Murphy

1986 · Round 2 · Pick 40 · LB · Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Kevin Murphy was born in Dallas and played at Berkner High School in Richardson, Texas. He was a defensive lineman at Oklahoma, first-team All-Big Eight in 1982, 1983 and 1985, and a first-team All-American on the 1985 national title team. Tampa Bay drafted him in the second round, 40th overall, in 1986 and moved him to linebacker. He played six seasons for the Buccaneers, then for San Diego (1992) and Seattle (1993), finishing with 12 sacks. USA Today Sports Weekly ranked him 80th among the top 100 players in Buccaneers history. Note: public sources on him are thin, so this bio is short. Pro Football Reference has a player page for him (linked below), but its stats weren't pulled for this bio. The Oklahoman wrote on September 15, 1984: "But defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs said right end Kevin Murphy, a pre-season All-America, will occasionally draw that deed." The Oklahoman wrote on January 12, 1986: "Another pre-season decision _ actually, it came near the end of the 1984 campaign _came when injured defensive end Kevin Murphy chose to return for a redshirt senior season."
