Lee Roy Selmon

1976 · Round 1 · Pick 1 · DE · Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Lee Roy Selmon was the youngest of nine children of Lucious and Jessie Selmon, raised on a farm near Eufaula, Oklahoma, where he was a National Honor Society student. He joined his brothers Lucious and Dewey on OU's defensive line. He was a consensus All-American in 1974 and 1975, won national titles both years, and took the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award in 1975. Barry Switzer called him the best player he ever coached. The expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers made him the first pick of the 1976 draft. He played nine seasons there, was the 1979 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, made six Pro Bowls, and finished with 78.5 sacks. He is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1995) and the College Football Hall of Fame. He later served as athletic director at South Florida. He died on September 4, 2011. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on April 9, 1976 (NewsBank page 81): "As everyone expected, Leroy became the No. 1 pick in the proceedings, becoming the first state player to do so." The same article says: "Although both were All-Americans, it was Leroy who won the highest post-season honors, the Outland and Lombardi trophies."
