Sidney Brown

1977 · Round 3 · Pick 82 · DB · New England Patriots

Sidney Brown was born in New Orleans and played at St. Augustine High School. He lettered three years at Oklahoma (1974–1976), including the 1974 and 1975 national title seasons. In 1974 he broke his jaw against Utah State, played two of the next three games with it wired shut, and ate his meals blended and through a straw. New England drafted him in the third round, 82nd overall, in 1977. He spent his rookie year on injured reserve, played all 16 games as a reserve cornerback in 1978, and missed 1979 with an injury. Tidbit: in the summer of 1975 he worked as a roustabout on an offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Pro Football Reference has a player page for him (linked below), but its stats weren't pulled for this bio. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on May 4, 1977 (NewsBank page 47): "OU had two other selections in the early rounds with defensive back Sidney Brown going to New England also in the latter parts of the third round."
