Steve Haworth

1983 · Round 6 · Pick 142 · DB · Houston Oilers

Steve Haworth was born in Manila, the Philippines, and moved to the U.S. At Durant High School in Oklahoma he was all-state and rated the state's top defensive back. As a senior in 1978 he made six interceptions and helped Durant reach the Class 2A state final. At Oklahoma he took over from Darrol Ray as the starting safety in 1980, with two interceptions in the opener, and helped win the Big Eight title and the Orange Bowl. Injuries cut into his 1981 and 1982 seasons. Houston drafted him in the sixth round, 142nd overall, in 1983, but cut him, and he played for Atlanta in 1983 and 1984. He died on December 8, 1998. Note: public sources on him are thin, so this bio is short. Pro Football Reference has a player page for him (linked below), but its stats weren't pulled for this bio. The Oklahoman wrote on September 5, 1982: "In the secondary, senior Darrell Songy and junior Scott Case man the corners and senior Steve Haworth and sophomore Keith Stanberry patrol at safety."
