Tommy McDonald

1957 · Round 3 · Pick 31 · WR · Philadelphia Eagles

Tommy McDonald was born in Roy, New Mexico, and repeated eighth grade at his father's urging so he could grow. At Highland High School in Albuquerque he set the state scoring record with 157 points and won five golds at the state track meet. OU basketball coach Bruce Drake saw him play and recommended him to Bud Wilkinson. He was a halfback on the 1955 and 1956 national title teams and led OU with 715 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns in 1955. Philadelphia drafted him in the third round, 31st overall, in 1957. As a flanker he won the 1960 NFL title, made six Pro Bowls, and led the league in receiving yards in 1961. He finished with 495 catches, 8,410 yards and 84 touchdowns. He is in both the Pro Football and College Football Halls of Fame. He died on September 24, 2018. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on December 2, 1956 (NewsBank page 37): "Harris knifed off right tackle for seven more and McDonald lunged to the two. Oklahoma, to the mental tune of Auld Lang Syne, was up to some genuine mischief at this juncture."
