Uwe von Schamann

1979 · Round 7 · Pick 189 · K · Miami Dolphins

Uwe von Schamann was born in West Berlin and moved to Fort Worth, Texas, at 16. He graduated from Eastern Hills High School in 1975 and earned a scholarship to Oklahoma. He kicked for the 1975 national title team and was first-team All-Big Eight in 1977 and 1978. In OU lore he is known for "The Kick": in 1977 at Ohio State he led the crowd in a "block that kick" chant, then made the game-winning field goal in the final seconds. He was later named OU's All-Century kicker. Miami drafted him in the seventh round, 189th overall, in 1979. He kicked for the Dolphins for six seasons, including Super Bowl XVII, and made 101 of 149 field goals. Wikipedia says he set an NFL record for extra points in 1984; the exact figure is cut off in the text I used. The Daily Oklahoman wrote on January 13, 1980 (NewsBank page 33): "He finished as the NFL's fourth-leading scorer with 99 points." The Daily Oklahoman wrote on August 28, 1979 (NewsBank page 13): "Yepremian was released by the Dolphins Monday to make room for von Schamann."
