From North Texas walk-on to All-American guard and Texans draft pick

Febechi Nwaiwu grew up in the Dallas area and played at Coppell High School before joining North Texas as a walk-on.

He made the most of the opportunity. Over three seasons with the Mean Green (2021–2023), Nwaiwu appeared in 28 games with 22 starts, earned freshman All-American honors, and was named third-team All-AAC. He then transferred to Oklahoma for 2024 and 2025, where he became a mainstay on the Sooners' offensive line. He started all 13 games in 2024. In 2025 he was a Burlsworth Award finalist, won the Don Key Award, made his first career start at center in the regular-season finale win over LSU, and was named a first-team All-American and second-team All-SEC, an incredible rise for a former walk-on.

The Houston Texans selected Nwaiwu in the fourth round (106th overall) of the 2026 NFL draft. His selection was announced by professional wrestler Raquel Rodriguez. As of October 8, 2026, he is an active guard on the Texans roster and had appeared in two games through Week 4.

His story is proof that the walk-on route can lead all the way to the NFL.
